How to stay safe while meeting a first date in Paris
Dating as a single woman in Paris can be hard sometimes, especially if you’re not from a big city or if you recently moved here.
And every day, there are new risks to watch out for while going out in the city. These are just a couple of tips on how to stay safe in a dangerous city.
Here are some tips to stay safe when meeting a guy for the first time:
Always meet in a public place, never in their apartments: This is a basic rule for the first few dates. Choose a busy restaurant or bar with plenty of other people around, close enough for you to leave if you want to, preferably a few blocks away. That way, if things go well and you stay out late, you won’t be too afraid to walk back home at night. Also, make sure you’re watching them prepare your drink if you’re in a bar so you’re sure it wasn’t tampered with or that your date is with you when you order and when the drink is brought to you.
Let someone know where you're going: Always tell a friend or family member where you're going and when you expect to return. You can also share your location with them through your phone. If you’re unsure of the guy, have your friend call you within the hour of getting there with “an emergency” excuse so you can leave, like, “Oh sorry, I have to go. My friend has an emergency, and I must help her!”
Don't share too much personal information upfront: Don't give out your home or work address until you have gotten to know the person better.
Trust your instincts: Don't be afraid to leave if something doesn't feel right. Your safety is more important than anything else.
Use safe transportation: Avoid walking alone late at night. Take a taxi or use a rideshare app. Alternatively, use public transportation, but be aware of your surroundings.
Learn some basic self-defense: There are many classes available that can teach you basic self-defense techniques. This can help you feel more secure when you're out and about.
Please get to know the city: Familiarize yourself with Paris and its neighborhoods. Knowing where you are and where to go can help you avoid potentially dangerous situations. Stay away from sketchy metro stations at night.
Avoid displaying wealth: Avoid showing off expensive jewelry or gadgets, as this can make you a target for thieves. Also, don’t use your phone near the metro door as it is common for thieves to snatch it and run as the doors close, so you can’t get out and chase them.
Keep emergency numbers on hand: Make sure you have the local emergency numbers saved in your phone. In France, the general emergency number is 112.
Be aware of local customs and laws: Understanding the local culture and rules can help avoid misunderstandings or conflicts. On that note, get some pepper spray. It is not technically legal or illegal. It is in a ‘gray zone’ where it is considered a “Weapon,” but it is tolerated and sold in spy stores in the city. They may tell you more details if you’re worried about the legality.
Remember, your safety always comes first. These tips are just guidelines: always trust your instincts and do what feels right.
